CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The Ohio Osteopathic Association Nominating Committee is currently seeking nominations for delegates and alternates to the 1999 AOA House. Anyone who is interested in possible nomination should submit his/her name to the Academy. The deadline is February 27, 1998.

The OOA Screening Committee is also seeking nominations for AOA Board of Trustees as well as other AOA elected offices. Anyone interested in being considered as an Ohio candidate for the AOA Board of Trustees should contact the Academy office and request an application form. The deadline is January 31, 1998.

New Member
The Academy has received a completed application from Scott W. Swabb, D.O. (Internal Medicine-Piqua, Oh). According to our bylaws, if no objection is received from a member in 30 days, then Dr. Swabb will be enrolled as a regular member.


Volunteer Needed
The Academy is seeking a member to serve on the Montgomery County Medical Society's Credentials Committee. This committee reviews new member applications. You must be a member of the MCMS. The committee meets at the MCMS office every other month on a Wednesday at 12 noon. The meeting last approximately 1 hour and lunch is served. Notices are mailed prior to the next meeting. The Academy has been in contact with Lindig Benefit Consultants, Inc. regarding health insurance (Anthem) as well as other pre-tax programs, Medical Savings Accounts for the entire practice or the single sole-proprietor practice. They can look at ways to meet your individual office needs yet offer a discount over the regular products. Dr. James G. Laws is now noted in the Congressional Record. Dr. Laws has delivered tons of food, water, clothing and medicine from relief agencies to people in need around the world. Rep. Tony Hall (D-Dayton) inserted a statement lauding Dr. Laws' efforts on Page E1287 in the Extensions of Remarks section of the July 14th Congressional Record.

Happy days of leisure to Dr. James R. Hodge who retired on September 1st, 1998. All patient records will remain with Dr. Darin Green who was Dr. Hodge's associate.

Best Wishes as well to Dr. Peter A. Sambol who retired this past July after many years of practice in Eaton and Trotwood.

Dr. Frank George was selected as the first recipient for the Physician Achievement Award. At the A.E.C. meeting on September 3rd, a motion was passed to make this a quarterly selection because of the time involved in getting the information, placing the information on the Web page and allowing more time for each recipient to be highlighted on the Web page.

Issues: Do you consider yourself alone or being at a disadvantage when negotiating provider contracts with large managed care organizations? Have you considered whether an organized Union could or should represent your interests? Do you know what organized Unions can and cannot do to represent individual physicians in negotiating contracts? Are you knowledgeable about anti-trust law, which governs collective bargaining activities, and how it specifically relates to certain classes of physicians? What organizational structure should best advocate for physicians with regards to addressing issues related to managed care organizations?

To Dr. Andrew H. Gabriel who became a Fellow in the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons at their annual Conclave Ceremony on September 27th at the Chicago Marriott. Dr. Gabriel is the current Chief of Staff at Grandview & Southview Hospitals and past president of the Academy. Dr. Gabriel was presented and hooded by his father Dr. Speros Gabriel who received his fellow status over thirty years ago.

Joint Committee On Managed Care
The Academy has bee asked to participate on the Joint Committee On Managed Care along with the Dayton Bar Association and the Montgomery County Medical Society. We are therefore seeking 4-5 physicians who wish to serve on this committee. Their next meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 1999 at 6:00 p.m. (food provided) at the Dayton Bar Association office. If you wish to participate and/or wish to attend the next meeting, please call the Academy Office with your intentions.
